Oxford is located in Worcester County, Massachusetts, approximately 11 miles south of Worcester, MA. Oxford is the birthplace of Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross. Oxford is also the birthplace of Elliot Joslin, the first doctor in the United States to specialize in diabetes and founder of todays Joslin Diabetes Center.
The Oxford settlement, originally known as Manchaug, embraced many different cultures during its first seventy five years. In 1656, the earliest Native Americans were observed in Oxford when the Missionary, John Elliot and his partner Daniel Gookin, were visiting religious settlements in Northeast. In 1686, the Huguenots settled Oxford under the guidance of their leader Isaac Bertrand DuTuffeau. The Huguenots remained at the settlement for ten years until finally abandoning after attacks from Canadian Indians. In 1713, approximately 30 English families from Natick and Waltham made their way to the settlement and established what is now known as Town of Oxford.
